This year we’ll feature a different ‘Marigal’ every month, learning more about why they love Marigold and how they contribute to the magic of our shop!
This month we’re featuring one of the most stylish gals we all know and love, Katie Katzenberger! Katie is never afraid to push the envelope in terms of style, and that is why she is so special to us!
Katie didn’t realize she would end up working for years with gals who grew up in the same beach town she did. Katie, Linda, & Elizabeth all grew up in Michigan City, Indiana. “I didn’t know the Shikany family growing up, but I do know we all share fond memories of growing up in a beach town. Marigold brought us together years later.” It’s funny how small of a world we live in!
Her love affair with small boutiques started when she was growing up. “While in high school and college I worked at a small boutique in Michigan City called The Showroom, which was family owned. I worked at Greigers and Newman’s, too!” Katie loved helping customers find clothing and learning about the biz, all while she saved up to attend IU. Katie grew up in a large family. She remembers shopping at those specialty shops as a child for special occasions. “Every year we could pick out Easter outfits and Christmas outfits at the specialty stores in town. There were 5 of us, so we didn’t get to shop often. I loved shopping as a young girl – the colors, the fabrications, and putting it all together was so much fun!”
Little did Katie know, she would use this knowledge and passion when she started at Marigold!
Katie’s husband, Steve, was the person that introduced her to Marigold. “My husband was driving through Broad Ripple one day after work and drove past Marigold. He said it reminded him of the small store I fell in love with during our family vacation in Seaside, Oregon.” The next day was Katie’s youngest son’s first day of kindergarten. Katie was feeling blue that day as she watched her baby ride away on the school bus. “I decided to go to Marigold and check it out for a pick me up. I walked in and instantly loved it.” And you know what? Voila! She started working the next day. “I filled out the application and had a meeting with Linda the next morning, and that’s when we realized we both grew up in Michigan City. It’s funny how Marigold brings so many different people together; it’s kind of a small world in itself.”
Katie started working at Marigold in our early years of business. Some of her fondest memories include going to markets in New York and Chicago, along with helping curate a fashion show held at the old store on Guilford Ave. “We created our own looks and walked down the runway. I remember JoAnn’s husband, Kirk, walked us down the runway. He even wore a tux! We had cocktails and delicious food; it was our very own gala!” Over time, Katie has seen Marigold grow. She has loved working here and just keeps coming back for more! “The nice thing about working here is I have learned about the store from the ground up. I worked until my boys were in middle school, and then I took a break. I came back and stayed until my first grandchild, Caroline, was born. And now I’m back for the third time! You can’t keep me away!” Katie loves the bond and sisterhood between the “Marigals,” and of course learning about and becoming friends with all of our customers! “I enjoy learning about our store and business through working with customers. I love when customers become friends with each other through our clothes. It’s wonderful to see bonds made and kept here!”
“Broad Ripple is a special place, and I love how all the store owners and employees look out for one another. We know our neighbors and we love each other. We want this community to thrive and succeed – it’s our home.” Not only is Broad Ripple home, but Marigold is especially home. “If one of my boys didn’t go to school that day for whatever reason, they came to Marigold with me. My sons and now my grandchildren have all come to Marigold and helped out! My oldest granddaughter, Caroline, loves coming and putting outfits together!” Marigold is with the Katzenberger’s every holiday too! “I get the majority of my supplies and goodies for the kids at Marigold! Every Valentine’s Day, Easter, and Christmas, Marigold is with us!” Katie’s family also helps us put together one of our favorite days of the year, Lemonade Stand Day. The Katzenberger clan comes loaded with delicious lemonade and Katie’s famous sugar cookies. It’s a great day we all look forward to each year!
Katie has always loved fashion. She grew up with 3 sisters, all rushing to look through the Sears catalog as soon as it came. “My mom was an amazing dresser. She and her twin sister were models for The Kellogg’s Company of Battle Creek. They did promotional pictures. She was on a cereal box and in Rice Krispy ads!” Katie has found fashion advice from different family members over the years, and through it all she has stayed true to herself. “Considering that I live in a world of men, including my 3 sons and my husband, they have been my best critics. I do remember in college my sister and I would trade clothes all the time. We would wear the same pieces but in totally different ways, which is when I realized I could make a look totally my own.”
Marigold helps drive Katie’s creativity. “We keep up with fashion at Marigold, but we are not a fad store. I can wear pieces that are 10-15 years old with something that is in the store today. It’s great!”
Two of Katie’s favorite clothing lines are Alembika and Luuka. “I love the way the fabrics feel, and the cut of the clothing lays on the body beautifully!” These two lines fit amazingly and quite literally make Katie feel like she is wearing art.
Marigold is a special place to Katie in so many ways, but she truly loves finding the right item for the right customer. “It’s just really fun to put our clothes together. Seeing our customers smile as we find the right pieces come together at pivotal points in their lives is the most rewarding! We enjoy visiting and welcoming our new customers, all the while growing and learning with women that have shopped with us for years. We help introduce them to a new side of fashion they haven’t seen before or maybe were afraid of. We are so much more than a cold conversation across a sales desk; we want to get to know you!”
When Katie isn’t at Marigold, she loves to bike, run, and walk with friends on the Monon Trail. Being a lover of craft beer, she says it’s a great way to scope out new bars and restaurants around the village. Katie loves being active and outside (shopping for all of her outdoor gear at Rusted Moon), so you’ll find her on her days off playing with her dogs, hiking, and playing tennis! She loves reading and loves watching movies while munching on popcorn (many times from village favorite, Just Pop In!). She is also an avid Colts fan. Go Horse!
Katie is a wonderful part of our team because she wants all of our customers to feel confident when they walk out of our door. “Who you are at home and what you’re wearing is one thing, but coming to a welcoming, safe place where you will meet other customers and have the opportunity for us to help you is ideal! When you love what you wear, you find confidence. Everyone feels good about themselves when they are comfortable in what they are wearing, it’s just true.”
Marigold is a place where you walk in the door and your fashion juices just explode!
“Linda and Elizabeth have created and sustained not only an incredible clothing store, but a gathering place for all.” The wonderful customers that we have met over the years is why we are still here, and the sisterhood of the “Marigals” has made us a family. “It’s just really fun to see how Marigold has grown. We’ve come a long way, baby, we’ve grown up good!”
We have loved growing up with you, KK, we love you sista!
