This year we’ll feature a different ‘Marigal’ every month, learning more about why they love Marigold and how they contribute to the magic of our shop!
This lucky month the spotlight is on everyone’s favorite exuberant, genuine, joy-filled shop girl – Sofia Cento!
Sofia has worked at Marigold for over 9 years – we love her colorful style and excitement about life. She brings love and electricity to Marigold that only a Libra can! (fyi: Libra’s are ruled by the goddess of love, which is Venus)!
Sofia loves fashion because it’s an extension of her being. Sofia’s family makes her the bright ray of sunshine she is today! Her family came from a small town, but each person that influenced Sofia’s style as she grew up had a big city attitude. Some of the best memories within her family are connected through the clothing they wore and made for each other. Sofia finds the budding connections between customers & clothing at Marigold to be similar.
Sofia’s style and fashion influence derive mainly from her mother and grandmother.
“To go way back when my grandmother came to America in 1956, she supported her family by being a men’s tailor. She lived in New Mexico and she made men’s suits. I remember her laying out patterns on the kitchen table. This was my mom’s mom, it so funny, we are all just alike. My mother, grandmother, and myself would stay up late and just try on ALL of our clothes. We had to find the perfect combinations. That’s why I always urge customers at Marigold to try things on…JUST TRY IT, you never know what magic you’re missing out on!”
Both of Sofia’s grandmothers loved and appreciated fashion in their own way! “My father’s mother was a model in our hometown newspaper, she carried herself with the grace of Princess Kelly. She was someone who was perfectly quaffed. She never left the house without her lipstick and pearls. I still have a set of her matching pumps and handbag, it’s a delicate floral pattern, very feminine and beautiful.” Sofia’s mother’s mother (men’s tailor) would take her to Vogue Fabrics in Chicago’s Water Tower Place. “We were always on the hunt for sky blue fabric – we could never find it! ” Every single homecoming, or prom dress Sofia wore her grandmother would make for her. “I still have them. I have every single decade of clothing in my basement.” That being said, Sofia has NEVER met a themed party she didn’t like. “If you need something, anything, just come over! My mother and grandmother would keep everything. I have shoe boxes and cookie tins full of notions; beautiful sequin, and lace pieces my mother and grandmother collected for their next idea. I have the bodice of my mothers prom dress… I have a Mantilla, which is a wedding veil. At least 15 women in my family have worn it. It was made in Spain!”
Finding yourself and feeling good in the clothing that you live your life in has a special meaning in Sofia’s heart.
“My mother passed 5 years ago. I am still working on going through her clothes. I had to clean out her closet, it was so hard. I’ve broken down in that closet twice, each time ‘Stairway To Heaven’ came on the radio. Fashion and dressing has always been such a huge part of my life.” Sofia’s mother and grandmother passed down their love of small intricate details to Sofia’s daughter Lucia: “I love observing Lucia’s fashion sense. I haven’t been able to put a dress on her in 10 years. She stopped wearing dresses along time ago. She’s into patches. She sewed a patch on her jean jacket on the school bus, I love that about her.”
Sofia has always been a retail junkie – moving to Broad Ripple in 1997 instantly set off her love of fashion. Finding Marigold was a beautiful serendipitous meeting. “I was walking on Guilford, and Marigold had a now hiring sign in their window. I was in Law School at the time. Instead of interning at a Law Office I was working at Marigold and LOVING every minute of it.” Sofia has had a long time love for Broad Ripple retail. “I worked at Marigold while in school at IU, then Artifacts for 6 years, and Ginkgo for 3, with a couple others jobs in between. Then I came back to Marigold and have been here for 9 years!” Sofia loves the joy she has found working at Marigold. “It’s just a natural fit! I can’t imagine doing anything else. Fashion is the mistress that’s ever changing- she’s always reinventing herself & she’s never boring!”
Two of Sofia’s favorite lines we carry at Marigold are Flax and Niche!
“Flax is very easy to wear, effortlessly elegant, and who doesn’t want that in this rushed and busy world. It’s a throwback but still incredibly modern.“ Flax is relaxed while Niche is a little bit more tailored. “The Niche designer is brilliant in her cuts, her silhouettes are unassuming on the hanger but when you put the pieces on they are absolutely amazing.” Sofia could never pick one favorite jewelry artist that she loves, she is also a wonderful jewelry artist herself! “I am a jewelry fanatic!”
When Sofia isn’t creating jewelry you can find her taking a long walk or a bike ride on the Monon Trail. Sometimes you’ll even find her painting her kitchen a bright vibrant green in the middle of Winter! She loves giggling with her daughter and spending time with close friends and family. You might even spot her on the back of her boyfriends orange Harley! Wahooo! She loves any pizza shop or hamburger spot in the Village – there are so many she couldn’t tell you her favorite! She loves music! Sofia is really drawn to the beat of a song, it can be fast or slow as long as the lyrics are driving! Sofia has a tattoo that says ‘Love Always Love’ – and honestly we couldn’t think of a better way to describe Sofia. She is the kindest, most loving ray of sunshine – if you’ve met Sofia you know that just by being in her presence!
Sofia is a sassy and saucy ‘Marigal’ and we’re so happy she has been with us for many years! Marigold has helped Sofia continue her love of fashion and much more. “Marigold doesn’t just represent fashion. Fashion itself is an extension of love, self-expression, giving and grace. Fashion & Marigold are all of these things. When you are a part of fashion you feel like you are a part of something! Let’s face it even if you’re in a t-shirt and shorts you feel better with a pair of earrings and lipstick because you are presenting yourself to the world. You can make yourself feel better with the right lipstick. Marigold is that lipstick! Marigold represents self-love and helps us express ourselves through fashion, & FASHION IS JOY!”
Sofia feels very thankful to work at Marigold. “I feel blessed and grateful to work at a place that not only embodies the love and joy that I have, but that also shines it out to the community and to the world.” Sofia is so thankful for our gals Linda & Elizabeth too. “I am so grateful for Linda and her guidance. I was so low when my mom passed. She came over and we planted a tree at my house, that is something I will never forget! I admire Elizabeth so much, I tell her she could run NASA… and I could run the party deck on a cruise ship. I enjoy working with my coworkers so much I love everyone’s personalities and the life experiences they bring to the job.”
We just want to say, we love you too Sofia, the only cruise we want to be on is the one where you’re organizing the themed parties on the party deck! Shall we Fiesta?
